What to check first

• Whether it logs actions somewhere you can read them later. A ban with no record is an argument waiting to happen.
• How it handles raids specifically — a spam filter and a raid defence are different features, and a bot with one may not have the other.
• Whether punishments can be appealed or reversed inside the bot, or whether undoing one means editing roles by hand.
• What happens when the bot is offline. Some leave the server unprotected; others fail closed by locking new joins.

The usual mistake is treating automod as a switch rather than a policy. A filter tuned for a 50-member friend server will silence half a 5,000-member community, and one tuned for a large public server will let obvious spam through on a small one. Most good moderation bots let you set thresholds per channel and per role; if the one you are looking at only offers on and off, expect to be adjusting it by hand for a long time.

The second thing to plan for is the handover. Moderation is done by people who come and go, and the questions that matter later — why is this person banned, who approved it, was this the first offence — are answered by the log, not by memory. A bot that writes to a channel is better than one that writes nowhere, and a bot with a searchable case history is better than both.

Raid protection deserves its own look. Discord's own verification levels stop a lot, and a bot that adds account-age checks, join-rate limits and a lockdown command covers most of the rest. What it cannot cover is a raid by accounts that have been sitting in your server for weeks, which is why the logging half matters as much as the filtering half.
