What to check first

• Whether XP can be earned in voice as well as text. Voice-only members are invisible to a text-only bot.
• Per-channel controls, so XP is not awarded in the spam channel or the bot-commands channel.
• Role rewards that stack or replace — the difference between collecting every rank and holding only the newest.
• Whether the rank card or leaderboard can be seen without a command that clutters chat.

The failure mode is spam. Any XP-per-message rule is an instruction to send more messages, and members will follow it: short replies, single words, a race to the bottom of message quality. Every serious leveling bot has a cooldown — usually one XP grant per minute per person — and the ones that do not will visibly degrade the channel they are in.

What XP is for matters more than how it is earned. A number that unlocks nothing is a scoreboard for its own sake; a number that unlocks a role, a channel or a permission is a progression. The most common setup is a small set of role rewards spaced far enough apart that reaching one takes weeks, with the last one carrying an actual privilege such as access to a members-only channel.

Before you switch bots, check whether the one you are leaving can export its levels and the one you are joining can import them. Most cannot, and resetting everyone to zero is the fastest way to lose the members who were most invested in the system.
