What to check first
- Which database it queries. AniList and MyAnimeList return different data and different coverage of anything obscure.
- Whether list tracking needs each member to link an account, and what happens for the ones who do not.
- Content filtering, non-negotiably. Art commands in this category reach adult content faster than in any other.
- Whether it respects Discord's age-restricted channel flag rather than relying on its own setting.
The filtering question is the whole review for a lot of these bots. Many carry an explicit-content command set that is enabled by default and gated only by a channel flag; if your server has members under 18 — and on Discord it does — that is a decision you make deliberately or one that gets made for you. A bot that refuses to run those commands outside an age-restricted channel is doing the right thing; one that trusts a per-server setting is doing less.
For the lookup half, coverage is what separates them. Every bot here handles the top hundred series. The differences show up on a two-season show from 2009 or a manga that never got an English release, and that is worth testing with something obscure before you commit.
List tracking is the feature most likely to go stale. It depends on an external service, an account link per member, and a sync that somebody has to keep working. Check when the listing was last updated; an anime bot that has not shipped in a year usually has a broken integration somewhere in it.
