What to check first

• Whose model, and who pays for it. A free AI bot is either rate-limited, funded by something, or about to change its terms.
• What it does with your messages. A bot that reads a channel to build context is sending that channel somewhere.
• Whether it can be confined to one channel, and whether it responds only when mentioned.
• Image generation limits and content filtering — the same content questions as any generator, in a server you moderate.

The privacy question is the one to settle first, because it is the one your members cannot check themselves. A chatbot that answers with context needs the surrounding messages, and those messages leave your server to reach the model. That may be entirely fine; it is still something to know before the bot is in a channel where people talk about their lives, and a listing that does not say what it sends is a listing that has not thought about it.

Cost shapes behaviour here more than in any other category. Language model calls cost real money per message, so a free bot is doing one of three things: strictly limiting usage, subsidising you for now, or planning to charge later. None of those is wrong, but the second one is the reason several popular AI bots have changed their terms abruptly, and it is worth knowing which one you are relying on.

Practically, the bots that work best in a busy server are the ones that stay quiet. A model that replies to every message turns a channel into a conversation with a bot; one that answers when mentioned, in a thread, keeps the channel a conversation between people.
